iReb is a tool (created by iH8sn0w. ) for Windows® that will put your device into a pwned (jailbreakable) state so that you can upload custom firmware to it.

How does it work?
It uploads 3 pwned files using iTunnel so that iTunes can accept custom IPSW firmware.
For S5L8900 devices, it uploads the following:
- iBSS.MODEL.RELEASE.dfu
- WTF.MODEL.RELEASE.dfu
- WTF.s5l8900xall.RELEASE.dfu
For S5L8920, S5L8922 & S5L8930 devices, it triggers a heap overflow and uploads a pwned iBSS.
iReb supports these device:
- iPhone 2G
- iPhone 3G
- iPhone 3G[S] (old & new bootrom)
- iPhone 4
- iPod Touch 1G
- iPod Touch 2G (MB & MC)
- iPod Touch 3G
- iPod Touch 4
- iPad
- Apple TV 2

Well this work on iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 firmware?
Its mainly to use if you are going to be jailbreaking your iPhone with software like Sn0wbreeze, Ac1dsnow, Redsn0w, or Greenp0sion. It detects whether or not your iPhone's current firmware can be jailbreaked, if it can't then it will automatically give you the 3 IPSWs so that you can use the programs I listed above. The better on that I suggest for your iDevice and firmware is using Sn0wbreeze because its a jailbreaking software, also has iReb built into it.
