This tutorial will guide you how to update your iPhone software to the latest version by holding shift button on keyboard and clicking restore button on iTunes.

Advantages of using this method is the process of downloading iPhone firmware that more quickly because you can use a download accelerator instead using iTunes which doesn’t have a download accelerator feature. Also, if you failed download via iTunes, you will need to repeat the download process from beginning.

Here are steps how-to update iPhone firmware using shift + restore method.

1. Download appropriate iPhone firmware from this page: Download iPhone firmware (All Versions)

2. Open iTunes.

3. Connect iPhone to computer using USB cable.

4. In iPhone summary tab, hold down your shift button on keyboard and click Restore button.

What if you only click Restore button without holding the shift key? iTunes will dipls:

5. A window will appear to browse the iPhone software file (*.ipsw file). Select the iPhone Firmware/Software/OS that you have downloaded in step number one.

6. Please wait until the restoring process is complete.

7. Once your iPhone has been restored, you will see this message.

Your iPhone has been restored to factory settings, and is restarting. Please leave your iPhone connected. It will appear in the iTunes windows after it restarts.

8. Congratulations. Now, your iPhone software has been updated to a newer version. If you are using un-official SIM Card on your iPhone, you will get error message on iTunes which saying that your inserted SIM card in iPhone doesn’t supported.

The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.

Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone.
Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier’s store
to receive a replacement SIM card.

But, don’t worry about it. You can remove this message by jailbreaking your iPhone.

    Hi,

    I have done all the steps mentioned above, the only stupid thing i did was to uninstall the itunes and reinstalled ……..now whatever i do (Jail break..unlock) my itunes still shows the same message “The SIM card inserted in this phone does not appear to be supported “….is there any way to fix this.
