Reuters said that Apple has submitted a suggestion for a standardized SIM card design smaller than the micro-SIM presently used in the iPhone 4 and iPad, with the new sketch having obviously won the backing of French carrier Orange. The design would reportedly admits  Apple and other companies to adopt the card to design smaller and thinner devices.

With accomplishment of the standard and technical issues still to be worked out, devices using the smaller SIM card will probably  hit the market next year.
Apple made waves last year with Statements that the company was seeking to implement embedded SIM cards, a step that would delete  some of the power of carriers over phone distribution. While the GSM Association and some carriers expressed interest in the idea, threats from other carriers to withhold iPhone subsidies reportedly resulted in Apple backing away from the technology for the time being.
It is not clear  whether the newly-proposed standard is related to the embedded SIM technology talked last year, but it displays  to more likely simply be a smaller evolution of the removable SIM cards in use today.

My iPhone 4 was accidentally thrown a few centimetres away on my desk, then few hours later I saw “SIM failure” on iPhone 4. Not sure if it was caused by this incident, because my iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G were dropped alot and nothing wrong with it. However, I only see this SIM failure after it was softly dropped above my desk.
This problem is solved after I restored the iPhone 4 firmware to iOS 4.0.1. Rarely it shows No Service and loose the signal bar and shows SIM failure. But it was working fine after I restored its firmware once again.

I recently experience this problem with iPhone 4. It displays “emergency call” and “different sim detected” screens after I did jailbreak my iPhone 4 using JailbreakMe. This “Emergency screen” is different with previous Emergency Call and connect to iTunes screen.
So, this problem is appear on iPhone 4 after jailbroken using JailbreakMe and unlocked using ultrasn0w. It happens whenever I tried to change my SIM card, even though my iPhone 4 has been activated, full jailbroken (using JailbreakMe) and fully unlocked (using ultrasn0w).
If you having error “emergency call” and different sim detected on iPhone 4, read this guide:

Anyway, if you see this emergency call screen due to activation, you will need to Activate iPhone 4 using official micro SIM card or Phonebook card

How to Activate iPhone 4 without AT&T (micro) SIM Card?
This is a big question for people who bought their iPhone 4 from US Apple Store without having AT&T Micro SIM Card to activate iPhone 4, just like me.
If you don’t have official micro SIM card (AT&T), you can use phonebook SIM card instead.
I’m using DITS Phonebook SIM card
This is a normal SIM card, so I need to re-size it into micro sim card in order to be fit on iPhone 4 micro sim tray.
If you need a guide how to do it, read How To Convert a SIM to a MicroSIM with a Meat Cleaver!
Here are some images after re-sized. It’s a micro phonebook card now.

It mostly happened to iPhone users which recently or accidentally updated their iPhone software via iTunes. Your iPhone displays slide for emergency screen and connect to iTunes logo all the time after software update is done.

It asked you to connect the iPhone to iTunes to start activation. It should not be a problem if you have official SIM card that come along with the iPhone. But, when you connect the iPhone to iTunes with “unofficial” sim card inside, iTunes will say: “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.“.
