Apple responds to iPhone & iPad Location Data

by iPhone Users on April 27, 2011

While some iPhone Users worried about their location history being saved on iPhone and iPad, two others has sued Apple for tracking iPhone Users’ location. Today, Apple responds to questions about the gathering and use of location information by iPhone and iPad 3G. Apple published this Q&A on location data through their press release.

While these Q&As are quite long, I will tell you the most important points.
Apple is not tracking where are you at what time, never done so and no plans to ever do so. Both iPhone and iPad 3G not logging your current location but database and cell towers around your current location to help your iDevices calculate its location when requested while using GPS satellite alone is quite slower.
This data is not the iPhone’s location data, but it is a subset (cache) of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database which is downloaded from Apple into the iPhone to assist the iPhone in rapidly and accurately calculating location and it is not supposed to saved for long-period, but only seven-days, no more.
Within a few weeks, Apple will release a software update to fixes these bugs and Apple will continue to be one of the leaders in strengthening personal information security and privacy.

Anyway, here is the full-length of Apple Q&A on location data:

AT&T Acquires T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom

by iPhone Users on March 20, 2011

AT&T Acquire T-Mobile USA

AT&T and Deutsche Telekom enter a definitive agreement for the sale of T-Mobile USA for $39 billion in cash and stocks. AT&T, criticized and even despised for its inability to keep up with growing mobile data usage, by acquiring T-Mobile USA, they might solve its network woes.

According to CNN, AT&T and T-Mobile USA combined have over 25% more subscribers now than Verizon (125+ million vs. 93+ million).

By acquiring T-Mobile USA, AT&T enhances network capacity, output and quality in near term for both companies’ customers. AT&T also commits to expand 4G LTE deployment to an additional 46.5 million Americans, including in rural, smaller communities, for a total of 294 million or 95% of the U.S. population.

By expanding their business’ scale, it may reduce “AT&T crap service” significantly. The next iPhone generation may be unlocked for all carriers in USA, or even supports dual-mode GSM/CDMA as seen inside Verizon iPhone 4, the Qualcomm MDM6600 chip which support dual-mode GSM/CDMA. We will look further information about this.
Stay tuned!
