If this message appear after your iPhone updated to 3.1.3 firmware, you should read the newest tutorial to jailbreak 3.1.3 firmware by using redsn0w 0.9.4.
If this message appear after your iPhone 4(4G) or after you updated to iOS4, you will need to activate your iPhone using official SIM card (i.e: AT&T micro SIM card) or phonebook card, because the recent jailbreak tools such as Spirit Jailbreak or JailbreakMe need an activated iPhone (doesn’t support hacktivation like blackra1n does).
Most people will see this problem after restore iPhone software or Update iPhone software.
And then, when the iPhone connected to the computer, iTunes says:
The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone.
Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier’s store
to receive a replacement SIM card.
If your iPhone is not Factory Unlocked (FU), but you are using unofficial SIM card in the iPhone, you will get this message after restore/update iPhone software, unless you either insert compatible sim cards or continue read this post.
So, how to fix “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported” error on iTunes?
iTunes showing this error because your iPhone is requiring activation.
- A simple solution to fix this incompatible sim card issue is: jailbreak the iPhone with software that support hacktivation.
On 3rd November 2009, Hacktivation support was added into blackra1n’s improvement.
Hence, you can resolve the sim card issue on iTunes by reading Tutorial Jailbreak iPhone 3.1 Firmware using blackra1n
If the error still occurs even though your iPhone is jailbroken and unlocked, you may try these tips:
- If your iPhone software was update accidentally, try to put iPhone into DFU mode, restore/update your iPhone software/firmware/OS with shift and restore method, then re-jailbreak it.
- In rare case, you might be able to resolve this problem by updating the unlocker app (i.e. ultrasn0w, blacksn0w) which was used to unlock your iPhone.

[...] 8. Congratulations. Now, your iPhone software has been updated to a newer version. If you are using un-official SIM Card on your iPhone, you will get error message on iTunes which saying that your inserted SIM card in iPhone doesn’t supported. [...]
iTunes syncing was working after unlocked, and active with another carrier.
It is still unlocked I am able to place and accept calls, but its not syncing.
It gives this error. I don’t know where my old att sim is.
The weird thing is that the other day, all my apps got alphabetized.
Have you tried backup your iPhone, update to a newer version, then re-jailbreak and re-unlock it?
Hey I’m in the same boat and want to re jailbreak my iphone to fix it, however because iTunes is displaying this message it won’t let me launch 3.1.2 firmware to update it, so if I can’t get the new firmware on it how do I fix it? =S – iPhone is currently working and unlocked on 3.0 with ultrasn0w however it still won’t let me sync and this is what i’m trying to fix.
You need to put your iPhone into DFU mode.
Then, you will see restore button.
I’ve tried just about every suggestions and everything after running into similar problem. I upgraded to new firmware 4.0 on 3g 16GB, a refurbished phone given by Apple as a replacement and a second swap. Last 3g phone Apple gave before this had exactly same problem. It would not recognise SIM and after extensive test at the genius bar, Apple decide to replace it. That will be exactly 5wks ago of the refurbished 2nd swap and upon upgrading to 4.0, same problem is back.
Same SIM card not recognised on 3g is recognised on
3gs iPhone but 3g will not recognise any SIM-Card at all. I have tried everything trust me. I realised it’s a software issue within the 3g or iPhones in general. That been said, I gave a 3Gs on 3.1.3 I had not upgraded yet to 4.0. I’m dreading doing an upgrade on my second iphone considering what’s going on currently with my 3g . Apple is really losing it’s credibility here slowly.
I added the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia via Wifi and installed the unlock software untrasnow so my SIM card is now recognised and untethered. I only have to do this again if I restore.
hello…I use blackra1n for unlocking my iPhone 3GS but always when I close and open the iPhone it wants me to connect the phone to the iTunes…I dont know why ?!! looks like the phone opens in DFU mode..
any one know why?
Thanks
Hi Ross, it’s called tethered jailbreak.
We need the jailbreaking tools in order to get iPhone 3GS fully jailbroken.
My problem is that I got an Iphone from a friend. And after reinstalling it, I cant get in to it. It says that I need a supported sim card. So I can’t use it at all.
I have tried thousands of times jailbreaking it by using Blackra1n. But I can’t complete it because I need the supported Sim card.
Did you successfully jailbreak it?
You don’t need supported SIM card to jailbreak, simply run blackra1n, then “supported sim card” error on iTunes will be dissappear.
Blackra1n can’t make dissappear the “supported sim card” error .
You are wrong.
Then, what does it do?
blackra1n will hacktivate your iPhone, hence your iPhone will by-pass activation and iTunes won’t tell your invalid sim card anymore.
Hi there. I have an iphone 3G Modem firmware 02.28.00
It was jailbroken for me in UK when brand new(I don’t know which prog was used but I have Cydia and Installer). I am abroad now for a year and not going back to UK straight away so I need help here if you can. I have never updated the phone software again after that. Never had any problems until today. As usual, had my MacBook software update done(iTunes was updated too – maybe that is the problem?) and then connected my iphone. Got the message “SIM is not supported blah, blah, blah…” The phone is working fine otherwise. Calls, texts and everything else are not affected. The only thing is that I can’t update my music, pics and calendars. Please advise what to do. Should I update my iphone Modem firmware? I know that newer software is better but I am worried that I won’t be able to do everything correctly and might block my iphone to “unusable” state. All I want is a minimum of changes – just to get the iphone to upload music, pics and calendars. If you believe that I should update the Modem firmware – I really want to have all the latest features – please tell me how and what firmware to update to(what’s unlockable now?), what programs to use and everything else.
I would really appreciate your help with this.
Cheers!
Hi Siaerhei, you can update your iPhone 3G software without problem.

It was unlockable by using blackra1n, also hacktivate your iPhone so you can sync musics, videos, etc to your iPhone.
However, upgrading your iPhone software will affect to apps on your iPhone. Some apps may not work if it doesn’t have updated version for the new firmware.
Oh, one more thing. I don’t have any UK sim cards with me.
Cheers.
Thanks for that Ryan. However I am not sure it was blackra1n. Redsn0w or something else… How do I update my jailbroken unlocked iphone with new firmware? Which firmware to use? And how to unlock it again to any SIM?
Cheers
Shall I update it via iTunes?
I recommend you to read this: http://iphoners.org/howto-update-iphone-software-shift-restore/

I have done ALL that was said here (and on other help sites) but nothing works. I still get the sim card not suported BS from iTunes. I think its ridiculous what we consumers have to got htrough just to get this “phone” working after an update.
Anybody with a few more ideas?

I’ve restored, tried the blackr1n, but don’t get the “faec” to show…so nothing happens…..
I updated to iOS 4.0.1 on my iPhone 3gs new boot rom and activated using iPhone activation sim card. This worked and i was able to jailbreak and unlock but when i removed the activation sim card and replaced it with my local sim card it said the sim card is not supported and turned to the emergency screen. Any idea? I can recieve calls but cant go past the emmergency screen
Important Trouble Shooting. Update 06-08-2010
Fix the “THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED” problem
itunes have made some changes to block unlocking of iphones on 06th august 2010, and will lockdown the iphone to use only original sim even if jailbroken and unlocked via jailbreakme and ultrasn0w.
If you dont have one already get an activation sim from http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/cable_picker/94917_iPhone_Activation_Sim_Card.html
remember, the activation sim is only to activate and get you past the “slide for emergency” and give “slide to unlock”
we have uploaded a full guide to our servers, you will find it at http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/simhelp.zip
this help file will show you how to activate it, jailbreak and unlock, it pays special attention to the problem created by itunes update today that is blocking access to the phone even when unlocked.
