If your iPhone is not Factory Unlocked (FU), but you are using unofficial SIM card in the iPhone, you will get this message after restore/update iPhone software, unless you either insert compatible sim cards or continue read this post.
So, how to fix “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported” error on iTunes?
iTunes showing this error because your iPhone is asking for activation. You can simply remove this error by inserting official SIM-card where the iPhone locked to. i.e. I have an iPhone which is locked to AT&T carrier (US). When I connect it to iTunes, this issue came up. All I need to do now is inserting AT&T SIM card to iPhone, re-connect to computer, and iTunes will start the activation process.
But, I do not live in the US. Can I still use AT&T SIM card to activate iPhone? YES, you can.
You can buy AT&T SIM card, or any sim card which your iPhone locked to on eBay for a few bucks.

You need to put your iPhone into DFU mode.

It was jailbroken for me in UK when brand new(I don't know which prog was used but I have Cydia and Installer). I am abroad now for a year and not going back to UK straight away so I need help here if you can. I have never updated the phone software again after that. Never had any problems until today. As usual, had my MacBook software update done(iTunes was updated too – maybe that is the problem?) and then connected my iphone. Got the message "SIM is not supported blah, blah, blah…" The phone is working fine otherwise. Calls, texts and everything else are not affected. The only thing is that I can't update my music, pics and calendars. Please advise what to do. Should I update my iphone Modem firmware? I know that newer software is better but I am worried that I won't be able to do everything correctly and might block my iphone to "unusable" state. All I want is a minimum of changes – just to get the iphone to upload music, pics and calendars. If you believe that I should update the Modem firmware – I really want to have all the latest features – please tell me how and what firmware to update to(what's unlockable now?), what programs to use and everything else.

Hi Siaerhei, you can update your iPhone 3G software without problem.
It was unlockable by using blackra1n, also hacktivate your iPhone so you can sync musics, videos, etc to your iPhone.
However, upgrading your iPhone software will affect to apps on your iPhone. Some apps may not work if it doesn’t have updated version for the new firmware.

You don't need supported SIM card to jailbreak, simply run blackra1n, then "supported sim card" error on iTunes will be dissappear.

You don't need to restore iPhone to factory setting before running redsn0w.exe
Then, what does it do?
blackra1n will hacktivate your iPhone, hence your iPhone will by-pass activation and iTunes won't tell your invalid sim card anymore.

I’ve tried just about every suggestions and everything after running into similar problem. I upgraded to new firmware 4.0 on 3g 16GB, a refurbished phone given by Apple as a replacement and a second swap. Last 3g phone Apple gave before this had exactly same problem. It would not recognise SIM and after extensive test at the genius bar, Apple decide to replace it. That will be exactly 5wks ago of the refurbished 2nd swap and upon upgrading to 4.0, same problem is back.

I updated to iOS 4.0.1 on my iPhone 3gs new boot rom and activated using iPhone activation sim card. This worked and i was able to jailbreak and unlock but when i removed the activation sim card and replaced it with my local sim card it said the sim card is not supported and turned to the emergency screen. itunes have made some changes to block unlocking of iphones on 06th august 2010, and will lockdown the iphone to use only original sim even if jailbroken and unlocked via jailbreakme and ultrasn0w.

remember, the activation sim is only to activate and get you past the "slide for emergency" and give "slide to unlock"

So I got a used 2g 8 gig ipod and jailbroke it yesterday. I had a lot of problems getting it to recognize my tmobile sim card. When it finally did, I was able to use it for a few minutes and then it said no sim card. If I turn the phone on and off a few times I can get it to recognize it again for a few minutes and then the same thing happens.
Is this a problem with my sim card? Or my jailbreak? Or even the actual iphone? Any suggestions?

After doing so i am also stuck with the emergency slider and itunes complaining about my sim card.

I've been trying to jailbreak my iPhone 3gs and i got stuck on the stage hold home + power. It wont go into DFU mode, my buttons seem to been fine but when i tryed holding it down for 10 seconds nothing happened.. anyway, i left it there and now there is just a BLACK SCREEN.. like its turned off. no power. and now it wont turn back on.. I purchased 3G iPhone from a friend who got it from an Apple Store as unlocked. I installed a simm card from my provider and activated it. Came home and connected to iTunes to put some music on it and it automatically upgrade the software which killed the phone and took it to an emergency only state. Itunes tells me the simm card is unsupported. I downloaded and used blackra1n but it keeps telling me to connect the phone to itunes. I've tried the fixes from that website and rebooting but can't seem to get past that.
Can someone help me out with a step that I'm obviously missing?

Hi Rose, when did you updated the iPhone software?
First, find out which version your iPhone firmware is, then find appropriate jailbreak tool for it.
You can download iOS 4.1, then jailbreak it using limera1n.
To activate it, you must have AT&T sim card (in case it's locked to AT&T). But, if it's factory unlocked, you just need to activate it.
Did you remember the iOS version did you download?

i had a problem on my iphone 3G , i had restored Custom IPSW Version 3.1.3 with Sn0wbreeze, while creating custom IPSW i dint press "Yes" on "Activate SIM" Option, after restoring FW , it was not jailbroken and i was not able to restore any other FW also, because in itunes their was no option like restore , i could see only option is "The SIM card inserted in this Phone does not appear to be Supported". Then i tried with Redsn0w JB Procedures. i selected FW version 3.1.2. Finally it worked. now i can able restore other iOS using iTunes.

I bought aphone off ebay and then bought sim from telstra. It says sim not supported. is there anything I can do? I don't want to jail break it?
I came to the end of my contract with vodaphone, i had them unlock it for me. Put an orange sim from another iphone in it. I get the sim not supported on itunes, I have tried restoreing it by holding both buttons down. Can anyone help, dont want to jailbreak.

I tried contacting AT&T and they told after 10 days giving case Id, that my IPhone is unlock, and I can just restore to get in unlock, but after unlock I got error that “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.”
I called again to AT&T, they told its unlock from that side for more issue need to to to Apple customer care.
Now my Iphone again become lock.. and i need to do jailbreak.
Do i need to use AT&T sim card while unlocking, or do i need to be in US for uncloking.
Kindly provide me some input if any one have like my situation.

I have just bought an iphone 4G, on ebay, and done a full restore due to it still having apps, pics etc from previous owner. It is now saying incompatible sim. The phone was bought from an apple store and was apparently unlocked. It was used on O2.
Is there any way to unlock the phone, to support any carrier, without jailbreaking or is jb the only way?

What should I do? For activating I used O2 sim after removing the sim I checked the carrier it is showing O2 as my carrier though
