It mostly happened to iPhone users which recently or accidentally updated their iPhone software via iTunes. Your iPhone displays slide for emergency screen and connect to iTunes logo all the time after software update is done.

It asked you to connect the iPhone to iTunes to start activation. It should not be a problem if you have official SIM card that come along with the iPhone. But, when you connect the iPhone to iTunes with “unofficial” sim card inside, iTunes will say: “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.“.

DFU is stand for Device Firmware Update.
This tutorial will guide you how to put iPhone into DFU mode.
Please read these steps carefully before you decide to do it.
1. Open iTunes.
2. Connect the iPhone using its USB cable. Then, turn it off by holding the Sleep/Wake button (top right corner)

If this message appear after your iPhone updated to 3.1.3 firmware, you should read the newest tutorial to jailbreak 3.1.3 firmware by using redsn0w 0.9.4.
If this message appear after your iPhone 4(4G) or after you updated to iOS4, you will need to activate your iPhone using official SIM card (i.e: AT&T micro SIM card) or phonebook card, because the recent jailbreak tools such as Spirit Jailbreak or JailbreakMe need an activated iPhone (doesn’t support hacktivation like blackra1n does).
Most people will see this problem after restore iPhone software or Update iPhone software.
And then, when the iPhone connected to the computer, iTunes says:
The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone.
Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier’s store
to receive a replacement SIM card.
If your iPhone is not Factory Unlocked (FU), but you are using unofficial SIM card in the iPhone, you will get this message after restore/update iPhone software, unless you either insert compatible sim cards or continue read this post.

You need jailbreak your iPhone, before unlock it. If have Factory Unlocked (FU) iPhone, this tutorial is not necessary for you, because your iPhone is already unlocked.
Read this guide: How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware by using blackra1n, if you have not been jailbreak your iPhone.
The baseband version of iPhone 3.1.2 firmware is 05.11.07. Now, you can unlock 05.11.07 baseband using sn0w package inside blackra1n app. Check your baseband version and make sure the baseband version is 05.11.07 before you continue reading this guide.
