It mostly happened to iPhone users which recently or accidentally updated their iPhone software via iTunes. Your iPhone displays slide for emergency screen and connect to iTunes logo all the time after software update is done.
It asked you to connect the iPhone to iTunes to start activation. It should not be a problem if you have official SIM card that come along with the iPhone. But, when you connect the iPhone to iTunes with “unofficial” sim card inside, iTunes will say: “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.“.
Why my iPhone only show slide for emergency screen?
You asked to connect the iPhone to iTunes to start activation. But, if iTunes detecs unsupported SIM card inside the iPhone, it will display this message: The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.

So, how to resolve this problem ?
If you are running 3.1.2 or older iPhone firmware version, you can jailbreak your iPhone using jailbreak tools which supports hacktivation. Example: Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware using blackra1n
If you are running 3.1.3 firmware version or iOS4 (4.0 & 4.0.1) on iPhone, you will need to activate your iPhone using official SIM card (such as AT&T sim card), or you may activate the iPhone without official SIM card (using phonebook card)

First what I did is I erased iphone, this is to completely restore to factory setthings (which I did for my friend, and it worked) Then came out that it needed a sim card. my iphone was from AT&T (bought the fone in black market) and I do not have that sim card for it. the installation process would require me to have the legit sim card for this to continue.
Any Solution for this one?

Hey guys, I have a legit AT&T iPhone with the service and everything, i was thinking about jailbreaking it but it wasnt working so i figured i'd just restore it to 3.1.3 fresh so i did and now it's stuck on this screen. Got a 16 gig 3G iPhone from a friend who upgraded to the 3GS so she could take videos.
I have an active AT&T sim card and inserted it into the phone. All was working fine until I updated it with iTunes. It wanted to upgrade to the 3.1.3 firmware. I didn't see any problem with it, so I continuted. Well it froze in the process (stuck at the same point for two hours), so I turned both the phone and the computer off. Obviously that was a mistake because now, when I turn the phone one, I get the display "slide for emergency screen and connect to iTunes logo". When I connect it to my computer and iTunes, both the computer and the phone beep recognizing the connection. Windows (XP, Vista, & 7) detects the phone but iTunes will not. I thought maybe it was a problem with my iTunes (Win 7 machine), so I uninstalled and reinstalled. Still same problem. It appears on all three machines as Apple iPhone – Digital Camera and I am able to go into the pictures folder but nothing else. I've tried cycling the phone by holding the power & home button. It turns off and goes right back to the emergency screen. Thankfully I have my old cell phone to use as a back-up but I really would like to get my iPhone going again. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I bet you have 3.1.3 firmware version running on your friend’s iPhone. It’s not yet unlockable.

I think enough has been said about this so I won't add to it other than I have been nailed with the same problem. After three days of fighting with this I have realized there is nothing I can do but wait and hope someone comes up with a way to unlock the dastardly iTunes mess created by Apple.
My question is, how does one know when this happens. It would be nice if there was some way to be notified if and when a "fix" is available to unlock the 3.1.3 mess iTunes created and I propagated by upgrading my iPhone to 3.1.3 (accidentally, I might add).

yeah had the same thing happened to me twice after apple couldn't do anything about it and gave me a new iphone. Only thing you can do is try to jailbreak it which is impossible right now for a 3gs 3.1.3 regardless of what redsnows or blackrain does. All we can do is wait for apple to release the 4.0 OS that might fix this, or a new jailbreak like limera1n that can jailbreak unactivated iphones.

Here’s the solution
1) Connect your turned off iPhone/iPod Touch to the computer using the usb cable. When you do this ‘Connect to iTunes’ will show up on the screen.
2) Run Blackra1n. If iTunes opens up, just minimize it without fiddling around. Just wait for your iPhone/iPod Touch to get fully charged and then close iTunes.
3) Congrats you are now out of ‘Stuck on connect to itunes’ misery.

I was having the same problem. The error message "An unkown error occured (-9812). There was a problem with the itunes store. Please try again later".
I tried everything I could find online but with little luck. Then I tried updating my root certificates as described below.
Check for updates to Windows, or search Microsoft's support pages for KB931125. An update may be available, such as Update for Root Certificates [May 2010] (KB931125). Install the latest available update for root certificates from Microsoft.
This solved my problem right away.
Huge problem with unlocked jailbroken iphone:
My iphone 3g, which I bought in France and jailbroke about a year ago using blackra1n in order to unlock it for the US, froze for no apparent reason (and lost all signal) while I was google mapping something. I hard resetted it (holding power and home down), because it was frozen for a solid 30 mins.
When I restarted it, it showed the low battery screen, and when I plugged it into my computer it would show the apple logo and a loading circle thing, but then would flash and go back to the low battery screen.
Seeing no other alternative, I put it in DFU mode, and restored it using a 3.1.3 ipsw that was in my itunes files.
Now the iphone no longer gets stuck at the apple screen, however I am facing bigger issues because the iphone is locked again, and I am unable to do anything. On iTunes I get the ‘sim card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported’ and on my iphone the screen is stuck at the emergency calls only thing.
I am certain there is a way to re-unlock my iphone, but I am running out of ideas…I would really appreciate any help at all on the matter!

So my 16gb 3GS is stuck on this damn screen now too. It was acting fucked, and somehow managed to upgrade itself via iTunes to the 4.0.2 software, thus locking my unlocked phone back to its original carrier (Which is Rogers. I am on Bell. I am Canadian).
So I am assuming it is restored to factory settings, locked to Rogers, and the jailbreak is no longer. When I plug it in, it tells me my SIM card isn't valid (which yeah, it's a Bell SIM and the phone is now locked to Rogers).
What the shit do I do? I can't even jailbreak a 4.0.2 phone and not like the screen changes anyway, so I can't even try.

Yes. I have solved my problem. Just about now.
After trying to jailbreak my 3g with 4.2.1 i had the emergency call screen with the connect to iTunes picture.
But finally after trying numerous things, while i was playing around, i fixed mine. and i don't think i am going to try to jailbreak my phone for at least a while again.
I have done many things before hand which was written here, but the last things i have done are:
- Turned off my iPhone 3g,
- Connected it to my computer.
- Opened up iTunes, it said "iTunes doesn't recognize this phone, Unknown error occured (Like how the hell is it Unknown if it's something you produced ?! Something i never get… Anyways)
- Whilst staying like this, i just unplugged my usb cable from my laptop, and plugged it into another usb port.
- Windows said "Device Software is being installed"
And when it was done, iTunes asked me if i wanted to restore my iPhone. I clicked yes. And let the restoration begin !

I live in Australia. About 7 months ago I bought an iPhone 3GS, 3.1.2, 32GB Jailbroken from ebay from Canada.
2 weeks ago, the screen went off and as I am not an expert I took it to an apple store. The guy there did a reset without connecting iphone to the computer and it worked again. I am not sure if I have done any updates unintentionally. Again about 4 days ago the same thing happened so I did a reset. But this time I had the apple logo, after a while a circle coming and about 5-10 min going off and the same story again.
This time I searched to see if I can solve it as apple store said they can't help me because it is jailbroken, fair enough.
On my googling I saw an advice to upgrade iTune, so I did that and that caused more problem.
Since then I stuck on the emergency call screen. I searched many hrs.
Here is a list of things I did:
-I downgraded my iTune to 9.2: It recognizes my phone but I get the sim card does not appear to be supported.
- Tried to restore from iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw I download by holding the shift key but it says not compatible
- redsn0w-win_0.9.2.zip then browsing iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw then clicking the install cydia or I tried already pwned but it doesn't reboot even after 10 min
- I tried blackra1n.exe: the message is this application failed to start because ASL.dll was not found which if you copy that in apple support folder in C drive it will be resolved. This time it proceeded to the entering recovery mode and then running sign shows and the same iTune and USB cable like the restore picture shows on the iphone without any other change for a long time
I am sure many of you guys experiencing the same problem. If you know how to deal with this painful condition please advice.

I had the same problem after a sync with my home PC that involved a prompt to upgrade the iphone's software (to what version I don't remember). My phone is not my own, its provided by my place of work, so I was not about to jailbreak it, I was just going to turn it into the IT department for them to deal with. Then I noticed I could not remove it from my PC by "safely ejecting hardware", it seemed it stayed plugged up even after unplugged. I decided to restart my PC to get rid of this glitch. After my PC had restarted, the iphone initialized, and then I was able to restore it from iTunes.

hey my iphone 2g is showing the same thing… the logo with usb connection.. my phone was previously unlocked and infact even tho its showing this "slide for emergency" and "itunes logo/usb connec" it also says my ROGERS network and signal strengh on the top left and i am still recieving text (the preview type on the main page) then when i slide the text goes.. but its not locked, its just messed up and i dont know how to get rid of this.. if anyone could help i would more than appreciate it.

Have you reset it by pressing the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time for 10 secs.
press sleep/wake button & home button at the same time for 10 seconds after that reconnect to itunes and hit restore and follow direction from there make sure to hit continue on the next message that appears you may be able to restore contact and other things at the end of the download

you just have to boot your iphone out of recovery mode then it should work fine.
Disconnect your iphone from your computer.
Hold down the power and home button again for 20 seconds, or so.
Then, a silver apple logo will appear.
I then let go of ONLY the power button (keep the home button pressed) for about 5 seconds.
I then let go of the home button and let my phone sit. In about 20 seconds, my phone came back to life.

hey ive got the same thing happening to me, i found an iPhone in the road and tried to mess with it and it did absolutely nothing, after i ordered a new battery and logic board it turns on and everything but with iTunes it say no sim card installed even thought the card that i found with the phone is installed, i updated to the highest firmware but no dice, i tried jail breaking with Redsn0w, greenp0ison, ifaith, blackrain, limerain, etc but nothing will recognize it. all it does is go to the emegence call screen and randomly reboot.

I have been having this problem for about 3 months and it’s getting more frequent. I solve it by shutting my phone all the way off then on again. My phone is not black market and I hardly ever sync it with iTunes (it’s been well over 3 months). Best guess I have as to why it happens (other than AT&T being evil) is that I have dared to walk out of the “range” of my Microcell (said range being, oh, maybe 15 feet), then crossed back into it again. Sigh.
Hey circuskeith6, did it ever occur to you that the phone might be important to whoever lost it? Try an ad on craigslist or something. Maybe go to the ATT store, probably they can ID the person using the sim card, which was probably blocked when they lost the phone. Could you BE more socially self-absorbed?

Accidentally updated my iPhone 2G to iOS 3.1.3. On the phone Im getting the "Connect to Iphone" and "Emergency Call" screens. On iTunes, Im getting the activation screen. The phone is a 2G (4yrs) and it has been jailbroken just as long.
I have tried using Redsn0w 0.9.4 but eventhough I have downloaded ios 3.1.2 and 3.0, I cannot find the .ipsw files.
help, my iphone has the same screen. I have a Rogers SIM Card but when i go on itunes a message pops up and says" itunes cannot connect to iphone bacause its locked with a passcode.You must enter your passcode on the iphone before it can be used on itunes." but how can i enter my passcode if, when i slide it it goes directly to emergency screen?
iTunes cannot connect my iPhone 4 it says unknown error 0xE8000022
But other than that, I guess it’s on activation screen also, I can slide for emergency calls, status bar is there, also my iPhone 4 is jailbroken. If I get an official AT&T sim will it work ?

I have an iphone 4: software 4.3.3, baseband 4.10.01 and I am using a GEVEY sim to unlock it. I was getting no push notifications so I downloaded an app called SAM from Cydia and it didn't work so I deleted it and rebooted the phone. Now I am stuck on the "Slide for Emergency" screen. HELP!!!!!!!! :(

Had similar problem with my i phone 4. All you just need to do i to put proper sim to your iphone and fully remove and install i tunes(with register cleaning)

last night i was walking home and i took my phone from pocket its was dead, i thought thats strange i am sure it was left like40 % of battery,when i thought maybe battery died. Next day, i try to put it one, nothing, ussually you can put on so 2-3 % still is on, it was nothing, so then i got worried. Got home put phone on charger, and as soon i saw some life in phone i thought, few…everything is fine. Well far from that, phone showed me horrible picture to connect to itunes, i have used itunes 1 month ago, and thats was the only time. well i did put on my computer, but nothing, no click clack, no life, even phone doesnt show connect to anything, just that stupid apple. so I got phone with contract so my sim is fine, i havent had internet on phone for last 1 month, and i never do any updates, so now i dont know what a hell is that and why did i deserve it? i have no idea about itunes, i just dont use them, and it doesnt seem that my phone would even could connect to anything… what you would do ?
My iPhone just says connect to iTunes. It doesn’t say anything about sim

I downgraded my iPhone 3g IOS 4.2.1 to 3.1.3. I was using it on a Non-AT&T sim as I belong to a different country. Now it is locked and shows a 'slide for emergency call' screen.
Can it be unlocked or is my iPhone now just a paperweight?
Please tell me if I can downgrade to IOS 3.2.1 or upgrade to 4.2.1 again and then jailbreak and unlock it.

a few days ago my screen said to connect to itunes. then it only turned on when it was in the charger. but now when i turn it on the apple comes up then shuts down again while still in the charger and it continues turning off then on then off then on. Please HELP…….

I had the same 'slide for emergency' problem. I managed to get my phone into recovery mode (there are easy instructions on the Apple website) and then, after the recovery process was completed, received a message indicating that there was a 1611 security software error. After exhausting all the listed remedies to rectify the error, I took my phone into a repairer. It turned out that my phone had been water damaged two days before but the problems manifested only after the water had dried (apparently this is not uncommon). They told me it can take water up to 6 months to corrode the parts and damage to set in. Your repairer can tell whether there is water damage immediately as there are dots under the cover which change colour if they come into contact with water. My repairer did this for free (in front of me).
