Apple to make applications from Mac App Store sandboxed, taking iOS approach

by Costea Lestoc on November 4, 2011

It seems that Apple is taking a lot of ideas from the iOS which powers its mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and incorporate them in their Mac OS. One of it is the sandboxing feature which is widely used in iOS. Apple recently released a statement saying that all software creators which publishes their application through Mac App Store to be sandboxed.

The reason to this approach is that it will protect the computer even more as malicious software will not be able to access any sensitive data in the computer. In addition to that, it will also reduce the chance of compromising the users’ computers due to the sandboxing feature that will be incorporated. However, this move will also pose various problems on the developers’ side. This is because they will now be restricted on what they will be able to access and in return, may not produce good applications.

This move will be made effective in 1st of March 2012. Until then, developers still have a lot of time to implement this feature on their applications should they decided to do so. If they don’t, then they can always sell their applications through means other than the Mac App Store.
