To jailbreak the operating system, there are some exploits and vulnerabilities that need to be found so that the original operating system can be unlocked. In the case of the iOS 5.1, the vulnerability found in the previous version of the iOS was pretty much the leverage on which the hackers would use to create a jailbreak app.
However, as expected, Apple has released a fix for the vulnerability making it still impossible for users right now to get an untethered jailbreak for their iOS devices. The Cupertino based company has given credit where its due when it comes to finding the exploits and the team that managed to get the credit was the 2012 iOS Jailbreak Dream Team. The security exploit include HFS exploits as well as the Kernel exploits.
For those that are considering the update to iOS 5.1, do wait until an untethered jailbreak is released. Hackers are still finding a possible exploit and to create a jailbreak application based on that exploit. Until then, it may be best to stick with iOS version 5.0.1. Updates on the untethered jailbreak will definitely be available once it is made available by any of the jailbreak teams.
